About This Project

I am a habitual procrastinator. I am notorious for beginning projects and never finishing them. I am awful with deadlines. I tend to over-plan and under-deliver. So, with all this in mind on Aug 10, 2003 I had the idea that it would be interesting and challenging to do a project that required the creation of one art/design piece every day for a year. So I began that day.

As I worked on the project I developed the concept that each day's composition would be an autobiographical representation of that day. Each composition would be a visual representation of an experience, a sight, a feeling, or a thought from that day.

I then developed a set of fairly strict rules that I had to follow, many of which were intended to force me to push out of areas that I was familiar with and try new things. Specifically, these rules were: mandatory use of typography in each composition and mandatory use of color. These rules were included because I felt (and still feel) that my type skills are lacking, and because I tend to design everything in black and white with the occasional gray and (even more infrequently) one accent color (ie: see this website).

During the course of the project the focus shifted from improving my skills as a designer to defining my personal style. In this I feel I was fairly successful, and overall, I feel like this project was one of my most important undertakings as a designer.
